The author of the article analyzes the attitude of the rural population to Orthodox ritualism as an evidence of effectiveness of antireligious policy in the Soviet Union in 1930th (using the examples of Don, Kuban and Stavropol villages). Topicality of the stated theme is caused by the gaps existing in historiography: in the scientific literature the issue of commitment of rural population to the Orthodox tradition in 1930th is insufficiently illustrated. Bearing in mind the purpose of the study, the author sets the following goals: to outline the motives for the intensification of anti-religious work in the USSR during the “Great Break”; to identify the reasons, which in this or that measure hindered the implementation of antireligious initiatives of the Bolsheviks and reduced their effectiveness; to establish and consider specific manifestations of religious sentiment and the preservation of the Orthodox rite in the collective farm village of 1930’s. The study made it possible to achieve a number of results: the reasons for the serious intensification of antireligious work, its directions and methods in the USSR in the specified period of time are noted; on the basis of a wide range of sources, the central elements of which are archival documents and materials, the factors that impeded the activities of the Bolsheviks in the fight against
religion and the Church and contributed to the preservation of religious beliefs in the collective farm village were founded; the spheres of rural life in the South of Russia, distinguished by the presence of Orthodox rituals, as well as the degree of adherence to such on the part of the villagers were identified.
