The authors consider the problem of translating the term “monotheism” into the classical languages of non-European cultures, namely Arabic and Sanskrit. The lack of a fullfledged equivalent to the term “monotheism” in these languages reveals a number of important civilizational features of these cultures. The relevance of this issue in the context of active interaction and “inter-translation” of modern cultures is obvious, because mutual understanding depends largely on how we can paraphrase (or translate) this or that linguistic unit into the language of the interlocutor. This article examines how the term “monotheism” is interpreted in the Arabic translation of John Hick’s famous work “Philosophy of Religion”, and analyses a number of Sanskrit terms that could be used as analogues
of the term “monotheism”. The results are as follows: the term “monotheism” is not translatable into the classical languages of non-European cultures (Sanskrit, Arabic) without losing (or, on the contrary, introducing) a number of connotations key to a particular culture.
