The article offers a comparative analysis of treatises from the field of mystical theology of Orthodox and Catholic authors. The object of the study is the works of Western theologians of the late Middle Ages (Thomas of Kempis, John of the Cross and Teresa of Ávila) and one of the first Byzantine theologians who were engaged in theoretical substantiation and poetic transposition of the monastic practice of hesychasm — the monk Simeon the New Theologian (the 9th century). The author pays special attention to the works of the famous Orthodox confessor of the late 20th century Archimandrite Sophrony (Sakharov). The relevance of the study is determined by the inclusion of its subject (properties
of Christian mystical theology) in the context of ecumenical dialogue, which retains its significance for strengthening and developing interfaith relations. Purpose of the research was to find parallels and points of contact between western and eastern mystical traditions. Basic research methods are comparative analysis and content analysis. As a result of the study, a hypothesis about the possible heterogeneity of a single Christian mystical tradition, expressed in different historical periods and in different cultural situations was formulated. The formulation of the problem expands the prospects for interfaith relations, including the hypothetical possibility of mutual recognition of traditional Catholic and Orthodox ascetic and mystical practices and specific confessional-conditioned hagiology.
